What Infrared Sauna Does
- Detoxification: Heavy sweating mobilizes stored toxins, heavy metals, and metabolic waste through the skin more effectively than exercise alone
- Muscle recovery: Far infrared wavelengths penetrate 4-5 cm into muscle tissue, reducing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and accelerating repair
- Cardiovascular conditioning: Regular infrared sauna use has been associated with improved cardiovascular function, reduced blood pressure, and improved endothelial health
- Pain relief: Heat therapy is effective for arthritis, chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia, and joint stiffness, and the infrared sauna provides sustained, penetrating heat
- Stress & cortisol reduction: The parasympathetic nervous system response to deep heat lowers cortisol and produces endorphins, with relaxation that outlasts the session
- Skin health: Near infrared wavelengths stimulate collagen production, improve skin tone, and support cellular regeneration
- Immune support: Elevated core body temperature triggers a mild fever response, which activates the immune system and may reduce frequency of illness
- Sleep quality: Regular sauna use is associated with deeper, more restorative sleep, especially effective when used in the late afternoon or early evening
Sauna + Red Light Therapy: The Recovery Stack
The infrared sauna and red light therapy work synergistically. Infrared heat opens the body up, increasing circulation, dilating vessels, and relaxing muscle tissue. Red light therapy (photobiomodulation) then penetrates this primed tissue to support ATP production, accelerate cellular repair, and reduce inflammation. Together, the combined 45-minute session provides a level of recovery that neither modality achieves alone.
Infrared Sauna FAQ
Yes. Mountain Ridge Wellness has a full-spectrum infrared sauna in Maple Ridge. Standalone 30-minute sessions, combined sauna + red light therapy (45 min), and an unlimited monthly recovery room pass ($250) are available. Book online or call 604-467-6545.
Traditional saunas heat the air around you to high temperatures (70-100°C). Infrared saunas use radiant infrared wavelengths to heat your body directly, at a lower air temperature (45-60°C). This means you sweat deeply and get the therapeutic benefits at a more comfortable temperature, and you can stay in longer.
Full-spectrum infrared combines near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths. Near infrared supports skin health and cellular repair. Mid infrared improves circulation and muscle recovery. Far infrared penetrates deepest for detoxification, pain relief, and cardiovascular benefits. Full-spectrum delivers all three.
For general wellness, 2-3 sessions per week is a common starting point. Athletes in active training or people using it for recovery may use it more frequently. The unlimited recovery room pass is designed for regular users who want unrestricted access.
Yes. Many patients combine the infrared sauna with chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, or red light therapy on the same visit. The combined sauna + red light therapy session (45 min) is a popular recovery option and is built into the recovery room pass.
Wear light clothing or a bathing suit. Bring water, since hydration before, during, and after is important. The clinic provides towels. Allow 15 minutes after your session before driving if you feel light-headed from the heat.
